haven, at any point a woman who doesn t have a place to go and is pregnant can come in and get incredible help. correct? right. absolutely. birth haven is an independent nonprofit organization. we provide shelter, support and education, so the women can come at any point of their pregnancy. some shelt divorce a 30-day limit. so someone can come in, but after 30 days, they re left to find another place. you have a long-term care. that s correct. many times the residents that come to our program are left without another option. instead of bouncing around from different shelters for 30 days at a time, they would rather find a stable housing that they could stay for the remainder of their pregnancy. that enables birth haven to provide education, resources and support, financial support as well, to in terms of how to plan, set up savings. right? absolutely. it s important to recognize that the women who come here are in significant crisis.
[ male announcer ] universal studios summer of survival. president obama will view the devastation in moore, oklahoma on sunday. the same day a memorial service will be held for the 24 victims of the tornado. officials say the twister damaged or destroyed 13,000 homes. impacting 33,000 people. to put that in perspective, the population of the city of moore is 56,000. meanwhile, we are hearing dramatic stories of survival. when the ef-5 twister struck, 22 people at the tinker federal credit union took shelt anywhere the bank vault. the tornado decimated the brick
helmets and hid in the choose sweat played like hell and luckily, the only rooms that were spared was the room we were in. just lucky to be alive, so many people have told us that here in moore, oklahoma. if you look behind me, you see what used to be a steel building and it lets you know that being inside doesn t make you safe. if you re not in a shelt, many deep underground, it is a roll of the dice whether or not you make it through a situation like what happened here yesterday at about 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. many people had about 10 to 15 minutes to react. for days they knew there were storm possibilities that could create tornadoes but in the final moments, that urgency, it was 15, 16 minutes, which they say is good in terms of warning but where do you go? what do you do? listen to what this one man did, that a decision that probably saved his life. it was all windy and stuff before the tornado came. i didn t have i had no idea it was coming. just figured it was like ye
storms yesterday and the potential for the storms yesterday as much as three to four days ago. we knew yesterday we had the potential for tornadic activity because of the fair warning we had with our meteorologists. help me understand how it works in terms of where houses are built, what they re built on. because as an east coaster, you think you must have a shelter in your house, you must have a basement. a lot of the homes don t have basements? is that true? i heard some reports yesterday that you couldn t build a basement in oklahoma or couldn t get a shelt anywhere oklahoma unless you use dynamite. that s not accurate. our neighbors next to us had a shelter put in their home in the last month. they dug it out in their garage. they hired a company to do that. many homes have basements. but not every home does. it s just a matter of what the homeowner wanted to do, what the builder wanted to do. do the schools have shelters in them? some schools do have shelters, the old fall
we need jobs, educational access and helt there on the south side, there are no emergency rooms anymore, for example, for crisis intervention. so i am rather convinced that the full weight of our government must come we had a full intervention in birmingham, to stop will killing. 42 have been killed this year. we need we need a level of support in there we have never had before. eric: you do not see that in the federal government. 42 people have been killed just this past january. 157 shootings. you want a federal program similar to what happened in the 60s to deal with other programs? intervention, you have mentioned that, we need jobs intervention, we need to stop the gun flow and the drug flow in and the job flow out. eric: do you think that will happen? we have been talking about this for years. it is the right to have a gun in america, under the constitution.
