Waverly-Shell Rock board chooses three-elementary option, keeping schools in both cities

WAVERLY — A late-emerging option to upgrade Waverly-Shell Rock’s elementary schools was approved Thursday by the Board of Education. The proposal, a hybrid of some of the four options previously presented to the community, would build two new elementaries to replace Waverly’s three existing ones and renovate Shell Rock Elementary. The plan would also include some limited funding for high school improvements. It was one of two recommendations presented to the board by Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools’ facilities task force “We’re kind of on crunch time now,” board member Dennis Epley, who made the motion to pursue that option, said before the vote.

Waverly-Shell Rock task force favors two elementary options, both keeping schools in each city

WAVERLY — A newly developed proposal will be one of two options for upgrading Waverly-Shell Rock elementary schools presented to the Board of Education on Thursday. The Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools’ facilities task force is recommending its choices during a 6:30 p.m. special meeting in the middle school auditorium. One of the recommendations — renovating Shell Rock Elementary and building a new school in Waverly to replace its existing three elementaries — was chosen from the four options previously presented to the community. It has an estimated cost of $31.9 million to $36.1 million for all work. The other recommendation has been developed since those options were presented last month. Along with renovating Shell Rock’s school, it would including building two new Waverly elementaries.

A closer look at the options

Option 1: “Right Size” Estimated cost: $24.5 million-$29.5 million This first option would renovate all four existing elementary schools — Shell Rock, Margareta Carey, West Cedar and Southeast — while making additions onto the three in Waverly. It would also eliminate the portable classrooms currently being used for fourth-grade students. Some of the advantages listed were that the option would keep the status quo on community presence, and it could address safety and security concerns. However, the disadvantages include no gain in operational efficiency, no space to address site concerns, and it doesn’t address long-term growth. Option 2: “A New Standard” Estimated cost: $38.2 million-$43 million
