While the full figure for 2020 has not yet been collated by Devon and Cornwall Police, it highlights a clear rise from previous years - in 2013 there were 27 dog thefts and the following year saw 25 incidents recorded. However, this rocketed to 69 stolen during 2016. The Dogs Trust charity revealed that 117 dogs had been stolen in Devon and Cornwall during 2019. Their Freedom of Information request noted the top five dog breeds most commonly stolen across the country were Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Chihuahuas, French Bulldogs, Jack Russells and Pugs.
