gneese@mininggazette.com HOUGHTON Houghton-Portage Township Schools’ food services director updated the district board on the status of several grants at Monday’s monthly meeting. The district received a portable service line at no cost through a Moolah for Schools grant from the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, Shelby Turnquist said. Houghton also received a Ten Cents a Meal grant from the state Department of Education, which is aimed at bringing healthy, locally grown food into schools. The district had run through the amount given this year, which dated back to August, Turnquist said. Turnquist contacted MDE for more money. None was available now, but the MDE told her to continue buying fresh produce, Turnquist said.

jvissers@mininggazette.com The Houghton-Portage Township Schools Board reconfirmed their COVID-19 delivery method, accepted the audit report, welcomed Troop 207 and said farewell to Crystal Verran at last week’s regular school board meeting. The Boy Scouts of Troop 207 tuned in to the meeting as part of earning their ‘Citizenship in the Community’ merit badge. “Part of the requirements are to attend some sort of public meeting,” explained Amanda Massaway, vice president of the school board. “So we’re happy to have all the scouts with us today, including my two.” The board also said their farewells to board member and secretary Crystal Verran.

Dec 16, 2020 HANCOCK In a Tuesday afternoon email, Superintendent Steve Patchin said there were three items in the Food Service Department of which parents and students should be aware: • Children who are participating at school in The Free Breakfast and Lunch Meals are now being offered meal pick-up for Saturdays and Sundays. • Children who are participating in virtual learning, homeschooling, or too young to go to school, are offered The Free Breakfast and Lunch Meals seven days a week. • The school is offering meal pickup for all children 18 and under during the Winter Break on Monday, Dec. 22 and 29.
