KINGSTON – An 88-year-old Marine from Kingston who was awarded three Purple Hearts signifies the sacrifices of Purple Heart recipients wounded in combat.
The Board of Selectmen has proclaimed Kingston a Purple Heart Community, recognizing and honoring recipients of the Purple Heart Medal awarded to American soldiers wounded while engaged in combat or given posthumously to the next of kin when the greatest sacrifice had been made.
It’s the oldest American military decoration, created as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington Aug. 7, 1782, and re-established as the Purple Heart by General Douglas MacArthur Feb. 22, 1932. Kingston will annually recognize Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day.

KINGSTON – The vote they took wasn’t what they expected it to be, leading to a second unanimous vote that puts the Kingston Elementary and Intermediate schools on target to open for full-time in-school learning Monday, March 22.
The original plan was to survey parents on school choice.
Kingston School Committee members agreed Thursday, Feb. 18, to reconsider their vote of Feb. 8 that included contingencies for reopening March 22 and instead approved a stripped-down version of the original vote so there would be no doubt about their decision.
The conditions were removed. School Committee member Sheila Vaughn proposed a full in-person return with a remote option for kindergarten through sixth grade starting March 22. Commitment letters will go out to families on a per-student basis.
