had deteriorated, she wasn t afraid of death, she was ready to let go. but when i interviewed president bush for the final time, which was about a year ago in november of 2017, he was not ready to go. he wanted to go out and have dinner, he wanted to see his friends, he wanted even after mrs. bush died, he wanted to spend one more summer in kennebunkport which he got to do. which he did. and he brought his friend of six months, sully, his service dog. it is such gripping imagery when that dog arrived today. michael, you said, quote, this is how history is supposed to work. what do you mean by that? the idea of history is you have one view of a president at the time he leaves, and hopefully if history is operating the right way, 25 or 30 years later, you see him differently because you get access to documents like diaries. george h.w. bush kept wonderful diaries, for instance.
the personal relationships he had with people, professional relationships, friendships. he really conducted in a classy way, communicated on stationary, picking up the phone. he did that for so many decades that he generated so much goodwill. towards the end met come the republican party was the party of bush. the rolodex, all the people he knew, the networks across the entire country, they had so much honor and reverence for him and his family. when he called and asked for something, it was sure, not a political favor. you are doing something for a friend. lastly, love. in terms of his relationship with barbara and his sons publicly at least, you would think a man of his generation wouldn t be conditioned to show that kind of affection towards other people, especially his family, in public. but his love and affection, the way he displayed it, was very modern. he wasn t afraid of embracing
thank you. and one of the things that george h.w. bush is remembered for is his cool, calm and collected demeanor. the former. u.s. president had a lighter side. he wasn t afraid to laugh at himself. on the show saturday night live in the u.s. they paid tribute to mr. bush and his sense of humor. president bush was famously a very warm and gracious man who always understood the power in being able to laugh at your self. ,000 points of life still operating coming in from all those areas. not gonna do t. not godda. george bush here. i m watching you do your impression of me and i ve got to say, it s nothing like me. there s no resemblance. it s bad. it s bad.
