what happened at that grocery store. reporter: well, brooke, as you well, as you can understand, there are people in this community who feel like this case is not getting enough attention. and in fact, they believe that gregory bush was trying to get into the first baptist church, which is just down the street from where we are, and he couldn t get in. in fact, someone was getting in the parking lot watching him try to violently open the doors. he just could not get in. and then he ended up in the kroger that s behind me. and that s where this story takes a disastrous turn. he walked in and trained his gun on a man who was standing there with his grandson and he opened fire and killed maurice stoleard right there in front of his grandson. they were there to buy school supplies when this happened. he then ran outside into the parking lot, according to authorities, and shot vicky jones, killing her in the parking lot, as well. and that s when another man with a gun approached and tri
trying to get in and he couldn t get in. thank goodness those doors were locked. thank goodness. ryan young in kentucky, thank you. what is going on in america? let s have that conversation. with me now, randy blazec, the chairman of the oregon c confederation against hate crime. he s been studying hate crime for more than 30 years. randy, ryan was talking about what happened in kentucky. we ve been talking about the attacks on people because of the color of their skin, the place they worship, and the political views they hold. what is happening? yeah, frightening. it s just sort of gut wrenching. as somebody who studies this academically, i have to remember there s a real human cost associated with this. and you know, i think one of the reference points we should be thinking about is the oklahoma city bombing in 1995. a lot of people rl unaware that mcveigh was trying to start a race war in america. he believed in these anti-semitic conspiracy theories, fueled by a book called th
shfs prote she was protecting her kids. this happens in schools all the time. our kids go to schools where our teachers are asked to stand in the way of a bullet to protect children. it happened in new mexico last week. didn t get a lot of play in the press. a former student walked into a high school, killed two kids in the high school, two bright, young teenagers and a substitute teacher, katie potter, she was subbing that day, had to push a couch in front of a door, protect 17 kids as the shooter was shooting from the class. he couldn t get in. she saved these kids lives. and she said i ll show up at work on monday if you need me. we re in the just asking our teachers who teach our kids. we re not just asking them in many cases to pay for their own school supplies. we re asking them to literally put their lives on the line for our kids. they do it every day. the fact that we re still here five years later is unspeakable on so many levels. we ll be right back. this is electricity.
he was a 34-year veteran, sergeant steve perez. can you tell us a little bit more about what he was trying to do and what happened to him? sure. sunday morning at 4:00 a.m., he left his house en route to his work station. unfortunately, as you know, we ve been experiencing massive flooding, not just houston, but towns and cities around us. he couldn t get in. so he calls his lieutenant and says i can t get in, everything is flooded. she tells him, good, because you need to go to another station, our station is starting to flood and we ve evacuated. he said, well, i m going to go to the kingwood station. he just would not give up. tragically he ended up dying in his effort not to give up on his community and his colleagues. oh, my goodness. i ve heard you say that sergeant perez was one of the sweetest
