Robert Ouyang Rusli is an Asian American musician and film composer. They scored Shatara Michelle Fordâs meditative, haunting debut film âTest Pattern,â which is available for rent now in Kino Lorber virtual cinemas. The film focuses on Renesha and Evan, a mixed-race couple in Austin, Texas; in the wake of Reneshaâs sexual assault, the couple runs up against the misogynoir at the foundation of the U.S. healthcare system. By contrasting two different nights out in Austin, writer-director Shatara Michelle Ford is doing something so canny in her debut indie feature Test Pattern. Drinks and dancing one night lead to a sweetly awkward meeting between the film s main character, Renesha, and the man who will eventually become her live-in boyfriend. Much later it could be months, it could be years, it s never specified a similar night of drinks and dancing will result in Renesha being drugged and sexually assaulted by a stranger.
That these two vastly different outcomes can stem from the same type of evening is precisely the point. (Though the film is not graphic, the woozy snippets we do see make it clear she was raped.) No matter what, Renesha did nothing wrong. That s important to stress, because sometimes even the most sympathetic friend or family member might find themselves quietly wondering if their loved one put herself in harm s way.
