On Thursday, the Austin City Council will meet to determine how best to allocate over $200 million in federal American Rescue Plan funds to aid in post-COVID economic recovery efforts. These dollars will no doubt be critical in supporting those struggling with homelessness, providing more equitable access to health care, and helping small businesses stay afloat, along with other essential human needs exacerbated by the pandemic. As we advocate that those resources be spent on the health and future of our city, let’s also push our elected officials to meet this moment with bold action by continuing to invest in what makes Austin uniquely Austin. The City Council must commit vital funding to support our creative community and keep the arts, culture and creative vibrancy as part of the city’s backbone.
