REVEALED: What killed hundreds of fish at Lake Alford

Premium Content Subscriber only Gympie Regional Council has revealed the combined factors of recent hot weather and low water levels have been the main contributors to a large fish kill at Lake Alford. Local visitor Rhiannon Carly McNamara made the shocking discovery this week, capturing images showing fish floating in the lake and sharing them on social media. The council confirmed it had received “multiple calls” on the issue on Wednesday morning, and later estimated that between 300 and 500 Bony bream and Eel-tailed catfish have been found in the water. The council’s marketing and communications manager Sharna Rowley said recent harsh conditions had been identified as the primary cause of the fish kill.

What s planned for $2 million Cooloola Coast foreshore upgrade

Tin Can Bay residents could soon be able to take a stroll along a foreshore with plans to build a 426m boardwalk as part of a 14km link between the town and Cooloola Cove. Gympie Regional Council has lodged a development application to construct the 3m wide boardwalk, which requires approval from the State Government’s environment department as it will be built near a tidal area. This second stage of the walkway will stretch from Crab Creek to Norman Point and include not only the boardwalk, but directional signs, seating, shade and viewing points. The State Government has provided $1.66 million of the $1.98 million budget for this stage of the coastal path.

New rule for Gympie residents who visited Brisbane recently

Gympie region residents who have been in the greater Brisbane area since January 2 are required to wear masks when inside public buildings or unable to otherwise keep socially distant. These new rules have been handed down by the State Government as part of its effort to keep a new mutated strain of the virus from spreading. This new requirement has already been shared on the Gympie Amateur Basketball social media page, with a formal notice telling players who have been inside the hot spot they are not allowed in unless wearing a mask. Residents headed to places like the Pavilion and have been inside the greater Brisbane area since the start of the year will need to wear a mask.

Why Gympie council paid a liquor lobbyist almost $5k

Community services director Pauline Gordon was serving as the council s acting-CEO at the time. Mrs Rowley said the council needed a specific licence type for the centre because serving alcohol is not the primary business activity at the venue . For events where liquor was available, a separate event-based licence was applied for. Since April the council has paid LLC $4991.80, including GST. The council s use of the business was listed on the Queensland Integrity Commissioner s lobbyist register. LLC was the only company on the register for which the council was listed as a client.
