SYDNEY, May 12 (Xinhua) - Beachgoers in the Australian state of Western Australia (WA) should feel safer following the announcement of new initiatives to keep sharks at bay.
One of the main features of the 5 million Australian dollar (about 3.9 million U.S. dollars) program, announced by the WA government on Wednesday, is an upgrade of the state s Shark Monitoring Network (SMN), which consists of a series of acoustic receivers. The system could provide relevant authorities and the public with near real-time alerts of tagged sharks.
Sharks are fitted with acoustic tags that emit low frequency clicks , which give each tag an audible identification number.
