Sharjah: Emirati women have just broken another glass ceiling after Sharjah inducted a group of 10 women into the first all-women SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team in the country.
The 10 commandos will be deployed for anti-riot operations, officials said. They would be part of the Punitive and Rehabilitation Establishment in UAE.
Brigadier Ahmad Abdul Aziz Shuhail, Director General of Sharjah Punitive and Rehabilitation Establishment, told Gulf News in an exclusive interview that the team will be available round the clock. Their responsibilities also include guarding inmates who may pose a danger to others inside prison. The SWAT team is also part of the Punitive and Rehabilitation Establishment in UAE.

A new initiative launched in Sharjah will help transform the lives of people in prison by giving them better access to reading and literature.

Sharjah-based cultural initiative Knowledge without Borders (KwB) launched the initiative called ‘Book in Your Arms’.
It will see access to books across the prison system extended. It will also create opportunities for incarcerated people to interact with authors and the literary community through a series of cultural sessions, in partnership with the Sharjah Police Punishment and Correctional Institution Department.
