The killing of a Hmong American man by state and Siskiyou County law enforcement officers during evacuations from the Lava Fire last month has led to mounting calls for an investigation into the man s death, attracting attention from politicians and activists from beyond the region.
Representatives of the local advocacy group Siskiyou Hmong Americans United 4 Justice said Friday they will be holding a vigil demanding justice for Soobleej Kaub Hawj, the 35-year-old farmer who was shot and killed by law enforcement officials on June 28 as he and his family fled the Lava Fire. Official accounts of the report claim Hawj brandished a gun, although activists say eyewitness reports contradict the law enforcement narrative.

It wasn t just kids that came to swim on opening day of the Dunsmuir Community Pool on Thursday. Under hot, smoky skies, over 65 children and adults showed up in just the first hour to play and cool off in the unheated outdoor community pool. I am grateful to be open this season, and for the four lifeguards that stepped up to work, said head lifeguard Kim Knudsen. It is going to be a great season. I m excited about our aqua aerobics class on Wednesdays and Fridays. It is my favorite program at our pool and it is geared toward adults.

Many dignitaries involved with the $3.2 million Mott Airport project in Dunsmuir gathered June 23 for a ribbon cutting ceremony of the airport s newly rehabilitated runway – just in time for the space to be utilized by firefighters battling the nearby Lava Fire.
The project has been in the works for six years.
Dunsmuir Councilman Bruce Deutsch, who headed up the effort because of his background with the federal government, said that this is a critical airport for safety reasons and central for fire fighting and tourism.
