The result of a months-long push for zoning reform in Connecticut gave both sides reason to declare victory. The reality is the anti-reformers won. We are at the bottom of the barrel in terms of segregation, income inequality, housing affordability, infrastructure and economic mobility and in the bottom half of states for fiscal stability. Over 208,000 families in Connecticut earning less than half of the median income (about $50,000 for a family of four) are paying over half of their income or more towards housing costs. The extent to which COVID-19 has ravaged Black and Latino communities is a palpable reflection of this inequality.
