Glaucoma support group launched

TMA Pai Hospital, Manipal, Department of Ophthalmology, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal, and Department of Optometry at Manipal College of Health Professionals (MCHP) launched the glaucoma support group in Udupi on Saturday on the occasion of ‘ World Glaucoma Week’ which is observed worldwide in the second week of March.
Vinod Bhat, executive vice-president, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, who inaugurated the group, said that the group will be a common platform to exchange information and support each other.
He suggested to develop glaucoma awareness booklets in Kannada and English to educate people.
With the seat sharing among the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) led by actor turned politician Kamal Haasan, Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) and All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi (AISMK) having been successfully finalised, the front will now be actively commencing campaigning in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on April 6. The MNM has allocated 40 seats each to the IJK and AISMK and the party will contest in 154 seats in the 234-member Assembly. With the seat sharing finalised on Monday, the party leaders have started commencing election campaigns across the state in all the constituencies. T.R. Paarivendhar, MP from Perambalur constituency and Chairman of IJK told IANS said, Yes, we have finalised the seat sharing with the MNM and are contesting in 40 Assembly seats of Tamil Nadu. Our alliance is a formidable one and we will try and capture power in the state.

Mangaluru, Jan 6: The Red Cross and other government and private hospital blood banks are facing an acute shortage of blood. Blood banks depend on organizations of blood donors, relatives of patients etc for their requirement of blood.
Normally blood donation camps are organized in the district on Sundays. The blood so collected is provided to any of the blood banks. But during the last week, no such camps were held because of Christmas, gram panchayat elections, New Year celebrations etc. Wenlock Blood Bank head, Dr Sharath Kumar, said that shortage of plasma and platelets will continue for four to five days more as blood donation camps were not held last week.
Mangaluru City Corporation decides to seek land for drinking water

Mangaluru, Jan 1: The city corporation, at its general session held here on Thursday December 31 that was presided over by mayor Diwakar, decided to seek ten acres of land for supplying drinking water from the new dam at Adyar.
A new dam is being constructed downstream of the new dam at Thumbe. This will help augmentation of water storage between the two dams at Thumbe and Adyar. In order to create infrastructure needed to supply water from here to the city, city mayor Diwakar has written to Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, seeking to hand over ten acres of land that is currently available at Adyar, to the city corporation. This was stated by whip, Premananda Shetty.
