Easing their way back to school

PETALING JAYA: Some parents and pupils are just happy to be back in school even as daily Covid-19 cases continue to be in the thousands. Schools began reopening in stages yesterday starting with 1.1 million preschoolers, Year One and Year Two pupils returning for face-to-face lessons. It was the first time preschoolers and Year One pupils had stepped into their schools since they reopened on Jan 20 but some had already got used to being “in school”, making the transition from home to classroom easier. Shanti Panchadcharam said her Year One daughter was already comfortable with her teachers and had made friends through her online lessons.

First day of school – at home

All set to start: Noveesha, with her trusted buddy, Bingo, waiting for class to start. PETALING JAYA: The first day of school was chaotic, but not in the traditional sense of the word. This time around, there were no children crying at the top of their lungs pleading to go home after the first ring of the school bell. For the first time ever, students – except for those sitting for major exams – started their schooling year from home, in accordance with the new normal. Pupils, especially those in Year One, and their parents, had to adjust to the new norm of knowing when to mute their microphones to avoid overlapping sounds and technical issues relating to the systems they had to log in to.
