Friends of the Meyer family and community leaders are determined to prevent that from happening. They spoke at a press conference outside Montgomery Town Hall on Friday morning to announce a petition drive and letter-writing campaign they hope will flood the state parole board with opposition before Peinado appears before it in August.
Rhonda D Auria, a longtime friend and former neighbor of the Meyers, questioned how justice could ever be served after such a ghastly crime - a boy stabbed 11 times and left to die the woods, by a predator posing as a child. She recalled the devastating impact on the community and spoke of the pain Peinado s parole eligibility would revive.

Family and friends of a child murdered in Orange County more than two decades ago are calling for his killer to remain behind bars as he comes up for parole.
Shannon Napoli remembers that day in 1996 like it was yesterday – when her good friend, Danny Meyer, left his house in Maybrook for a Little League game and never returned. It just became one big blur of emotion the following days, says Napoli.
The boy was fatally stabbed along a wooded shortcut between his house and the field by 19-year-old Juan Miguel Peinado - who is now up for parole.
