First year seminar students investigate gender disparities in comedy

For Lycoming College’s 2022 fall semester, the first-year seminar, “Are Women Funny?,” was offered to incoming first-year students. Created and taught by Shanin Dougherty, associate director of career and professional development, the course provided students with an overview of comedy created and performed by women through text and visual media as well as why the idea of funny women continues to be a polarizing topic.

First Friday restart collides with showers | News, Sports, Jobs

Mother Nature didn’t get the notice and her timing was anything but wanted. This year’s restart of the monthly First Friday street festival, postponed for more than a year due to COVID-19 pandemic, was basically washed out by inclement weather, including heavy rain showers that arrived about 6 p.m., an hour after it was scheduled to kick off. The rain clouds covered a wide area from New York to Maryland borders. The menacing large frontal system reached the city as the fun was supposed to start. Beth Armanda and Shanin Dougherty, co-chairs for the First Friday Committee, said outdoor vendors during this particular First Friday had to be canceled due to the ongoing rain, but to never count First Friday out.

May 7, 2021 “That sense of community again” that’s what Shanin Dougherty, co-chair of the First Friday Committee, hopes to find tonight when the widely popular Lycoming Arts First Friday event returns after a long pandemic-prompted hiatus. Yes, Shanin, that’s something we long for too. As a community newspaper, watching folks go into a prolonged period of isolation participating in it ourselves has been hard. So hard, in fact, that many would call it the biggest challenge of a lifetime. Simply put, we miss seeing you. We miss all of the interactions with the community, in many ways, including the arts.
