Mortal Kombat s latest live-action movie adaptation is mere days away from its 23rd April release, and, in preparation for its arrival, Warner Bros has shared its limb-flinging, martial-arts-hued opening seven minutes online.
This particular live-action incarnation of Mortal Kombat - directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo - predominantly unfolds in the modern day, charting the adventures of washed-up MMA fighter Cole Young (an entirely new character to the Mortal Kombat universe, played by Lewis Tan), who gradually becomes embroiled with the series familiar cast after encountering Outworld emperor, Shang Tsung (Chin Han).

Nearly three decades after its release, Paul W.S. Anderson’s 1995 ‘Mortal Kombat’ is still celebrated among viewers for being one of the best video game adaptations ever. So it’s safe to say that expectations for this new version are pretty high. And while first-time director Simon McQuoid does a great job of updating the film for the modern day, it fails just a tiny bit in reaching the lofty bar set by the original.
But the good news first. McQuoid’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ will no doubt satisfy fans looking for intense action sequences, gory violence and opulent sets. The cheesy dialogues, mirroring the original film, are also pretty much intact. The movie also benefits greatly from casting real-life martial artists in main roles, giving a breathtaking fervour and excitement to the fight scenes.

Mortal Kombat: New poster finally reveals a great look at Kabal

A new challenger has appeared! Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have unleashed a new poster for
MORTAL KOMBAT that gives us our first great look at Kabal. Before now, Kabal has only appeared briefly in the official
Mortal Kombat trailer, but even then, his back is turned toward the camera. Truth be told, I saw Kabal when I visited the set of
Mortal Kombat back in November 2019. He appeared on a nearby monitor and looked to be fighting his way out of an underground tunnel. Later in the visit, I spotted Kabal actor Daniel Nelson out of costume and practicing moves with his hook swords. Kabal has been one of my favorite characters since he was first introduced in Mortal Kombat 3, so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that he s in the film.
