USAFA, Colo. The University of New Mexico baseball team delivered three home runs in three innings, but it was not enough to change the momentum of the game and ultimately fell 3-10 to Air Force. The Lobos (9-23, 6-15 MW) split the series 3-3 after sweeping the Falcons (20-18, 12-12 MW) earlier this season at home.
“These boys have been on the road 75 percent of the season and in COVID quarantine for almost 70 days, not including the four months back home in between during the height of COVID,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “It will be good to play at home.”
USAFA, Colo. Despite posting 16 runs on 22 hits through two games, The University of New Mexico baseball team was edged out twice by Air Force in a doubleheader on Saturday. In game one, the Lobos (9-22, 6-14 MW) kept it close with the Falcons (19-18, 11-12) and led the game through two innings before dropping 4-6. The Lobos played catchup in game two but made it a three-run game in the ninth inning, but the comeback was not enough as they fell 12-15.
“In game one, our defense killed us,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “Then, in game two, our pitching was poor.”
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The University of New Mexico baseball team started off hot and kept it close in its series finale versus Fresno State (16-19, 13-12 MW), but it was not enough as the Lobos were edged out by the Bulldogs 9-12 at Santa Ana Star Field. The Lobos (9-20, 6-12 MW) were led by Lance Russell, who went 4-5 from the plate with three RBIs and one run.
“Fresno was a different team this time around,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “They hammered our pitching.”
The Lobos led the game through the first two innings scoring in both frames. In the first, Kyler Castillo hit an RBI single that scored Chase Weissenborn, and in the second, it was Mack Chambers who doubled to right-center, scoring Jacob Gutierrez.

SEATTLE, Wash. Will Simpson’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth allowed Washington to escape with a 3-2 victory, giving the Huskies two of three in a quickly put-together three-game series in Seattle. The Lobos, who lost the opener 4-3 in 10 before winning last night 5-3 in 12 innings, now head home before traveling to Texas Tech for a single game on Wednesday afternoon at Rip Griffin Park.
The loss dropped UNM to 9-16 while Washington improved to 17-18.
“These kids battle their butts off and just need a break,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “Washington came off of beating UCLA in a series and we had our chances to take this one. Not an easy week for us as Texas Tech is loaded and then we get back home for Fresno State. We have to keep fighting.”
Lobos Split Doubleheader, Armbruster Tallies 17 Strikeouts in Game Two
FRESNO, CALIF. The University of New Mexico’s baseball team opened up its three-game series versus the Fresno State Bulldogs (4-5, 2-3) with a doubleheader split. Justin Armbruester led the Lobos (5-7, 3-4) to a win in game two, pitching 9.0 innings, striking out 17 players, holding the Bulldogs to just two hits.
“Justin Armbruester pitched his tail off,” said head coach Ray Birmingham. “That was one of the best pitching performances I have seen at UNM.”
The last time a Lobo pitcher posted 17 or more strikeouts in a game was on Feb. 17, 1998. That pitcher was Jim Serrano versus Point Lomas. Armbruester is just the seventh pitcher in UNM history to tally 17 or more strikeouts in a game.
