(WTVM) - The Opelika Police Department shared an update on their “Together, Opelika” campaign that launched six months ago. According to police, the campaigned is designed to reduce crime and increase community engagement. Officials say since the launch, they’ve found new ways to talk with residents and build trust in the community through dozens of meetings, events and programs. They say they’ve also expanded training for their officers with more than 4,000 hours of training in 2021. They hope to increase accountability and have better relationships with citizens.

Alabama News The Opelika PD held a press conference Monday morning to give its concerned citizens and local officials an update on their new community initiative, TOGETHER OPELIKA. TOGETHER OPELIKA is a campaign to develop open dialogue setting, establishing the best relationship between the community and the Police Department. Last October, the Opelika Police Department launched the TOGETHER OPELIKA One of the main goals was to lower crime and increase community engagement. Since the start of the campaign, there has been a decrease in robberies and thefts compared to the previous year. There’s also been an increase in the community’s involvement with crime prevention and assistance in solving crimes.

(WTVM) - Opelika’s new police chief is three days into his new position. Chief Shane Healey has been with the Opelika Police Department for 30 years. Now, he’s leading the department. Healey replaces John McEachern who retired in November 2020. Healey began his career with the police department in 1991 and was promoted to captain of the community relations/special services division in 2014. He said he’s thankful for the opportunity and is ready to bridge the gap between his department and the community.

Alabama city names 30-year veteran as new police chief

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - A 30-year veteran of the Opelika Police force is now leading the department. The City of Opelika has named Shane Healey as the city’s new Chief of Police, effective immediately. Healey replaces John McEachern who retired at the end of November, WTVM-TV reported. “We are excited about Captain Healey moving into the Chief position. His love for this community and his forward-thinking approach is going to bring new ideas and ways of policing to our community…It makes me proud to know that we have one of the best police departments in the southeast. Shane brings more than 30 years police experience and he is deeply rooted in this community. I look forward to working with Shane and the OPD leadership team,” Mayor Gary Fuller said.
