Tamika Mallory, rapper
Megan Thee Stallion and Black Twitter. Whether individuals or entities, these nominees called out wrong and laid truth to the foreground.
From Megan calling out out
Tory Lanez to Black Twitter consistently “making accountability an art form” and a whole swathe of Black people “feel safe and sane” during difficult times, rhese nominees deserve their flowers. The winner, however, is Mallory for her impeccable ability to keep composure and making sure her words were powerfully felt during the Black Lives Matter and Say Her Name protests.
“Listen now, first off, Tamika Mallory said what needed to be said. Sis deserves,” notes Pinnock to the rest.
As today is the last day of 2020, we’d be remiss to not reminisce on all of the events of this year. From the global pandemic to racial pandemic, as a collective, we’ve encountered challenge after challenge. Through it all, one thing that held us down for sure was our families. Whether related or chosen, our families truly were the bedrock of support during these unprecedented times.
This week on the

Shana Pinnock look back at some of best moments of our inaugural year, to bring us a very special holiday episode. To ask this week, “Dear Culture, Did this year teach us that nothing is more important than health and family?”

Christmas is a loaded holiday. Sometimes this holiday feels like a “reminder” of that missing person in your family. Whether to COVID-19 or other causes, Gaynor remarks that the holidays “haven’t felt the same since [his] dad passed away” in 2011.
Christmas is often attached to the memories of childhood. For Pinnock, growing up her mother would double and triple wrap presents from her curious daughter. But as we age with our parents, we begin to take holiday traditions easy. Pinnock shares that now her family cooks a meal together and enjoy their meals in separate rooms doing different activities.
From the global pandemic, Megan Thee Stallion’s shooting and the Black Lives Matter movement, to the presidential elections, this year has been action-packed.
As 2020 draws to a close, the
Dear Culture podcast rewinds the tapes with our talented duo,

Shana Pinnock and Managing Editor
Gerren Keith Gaynor.
Looking back at this unprecedented and historical year, our hosts ask: “Dear Culture, as we reflect on 2020, what have we learned?”
“We are still having to emphasize Black women,” says Gaynor to Pinnock.
Without a doubt, protecting Black women has been one of the year’s biggest conversations. Pinnock notes that this year shouldn’t be the first time people think about supporting Black women. Whether it was or wasn’t, it was largely the work of Black women remembering and supporting other Black women that ruffled the proverbial feathers.
