Farming in Central Maui already holds a unique set of challenges. Add a global pandemic and agriculture operations are tested in a whole new way. So Mahi Pono, the largest agriculture company on Maui, has made key changes to its operations in light of coronavirus. The pandemic affected everything from shipping costs a 46 percent increase in Young Brothers rates took effect last year to in-field work that needed COVID-19 safety protocols. Restaurants and hotels major markets for local produce closed, causing the company to look at the type and scale of its crops.

Tsutsui promoted to Mahi Pono COO | News, Sports, Jobs

The Maui News Mahi Pono’s Senior Vice President of Operations Shan Tsutsui has been promoted to chief operating officer, the company announced Wednesday. Tsutsui succeeds Tim O’Laughlin who will be relocating to California to focus on new initiatives for both Mahi Pono and Pomona Farming, according to a news release. In his new role, Tsutsui will be responsible for all day-to-day operations for the Maui-based farming company which includes management operations, business strategy, community leadership, government relations and sales and distribution. Tsutsui joined Mahi Pono in January of 2018. Prior to joining the company, Tsutsui served as Hawaii’s lieutenant governor and a state senator representing Maui, in addition to with being a business owner and financial advisor.
