city are you okay? rescuers, helping guide residents through submerged intersection, since, having been turned into a lake. then, there is this. the electricity crisis. the storm, knocking out power lines, in more than 2 million homes, and businesses, which have been plunged into darkness, across the state. meteorologist, pedram javaheri, tracking ian. he joins me. pedram, ian may have weekend, but is unleashing very dangerous conditions. where does it stand right now? kristie, we ve got the latest update from the national hurricane center. 11 hours overland, since it made landfall. you will notice, still, a category one. a drop from 90 miles per hour, to 75 miles per hour, leaving this as a low-end, category one hurricane. notice, on the back side of the storm system, the cloud field, beginning to break. as far as clearing skies, around portions of marco island, around areas up towards tampa. all of these areas, finally, seeing drier weather persist. just east of i
about in hurricanes. people look at the wind, the wind is dramatic, you can get a hurricane that can do damage, but a storm surges where they are saying if you are in a directly hit area could be not survivable in this case. a storm like nothing they have seen since the 1800s, with blocked roams, home destructions, massive power outages. so, how to storm surges work? think about that big swirling storm we talk about all the time. every place that it is contacting the water, it is pushing water in front of it. so, if you are out in deep water, out here it pushes the water in epic circular motion. well, so what? because it s deep enough and just keeps growing down into the water, it does not matter. but when it gets into a more shallow area it runs out of space, and the water that is being pushed on the parts going towards gland could go down anymore, and it starts going and word. and the result is, then you have this surge of water that starts pushing and. the longer and shallower the r
keith morrison : then, said scott, he drove to the berkeley marina about ninety miles away. parked his car, and put his boat in the water. al brocchini (interrogation video): when you got in your boat and you took off, did you go very far, or scott peterson (interrogation video): well, i mean, probably a couple miles. i went north, found a like, a little island kind of deal there. al brocchini (interrogation video): mm-hm. scott peterson (interrogation video): island had a bunch of trash on it. i remember a big sign that said, no landing. it looked like some broken piers around it. and i just assumed it would be a decent, you know, shallow area. al brocchini (interrogation video): did you troll? scott peterson (interrogation video): little bit. i mean, a lot of lot of the reason i went was just to get that boat in the water. keith morrison : details that sounded plausible enough, except to detective brocchini. keith morrison : he drew a short straw when he got a fisherman to talk
those crews may have a hard time reaching them. not just because of dangerous conditions, but, because they, also, have been affected by the floodwaters. waiting for daybreak, to get that full damage assessment. gloria palomino, we thank you, indeed, for your reporting. take care, stay well. let s head back to cnn s world weather center, to our meteorologist, pedram javaheri. pedram, hurricane ian, so destructive. it is a superlative storm, in size, and strength. why is it so intense? the intensity here, really, ramping up in the span of 12 hours. when we saw these ocean temperatures, among the highest oceanic heat content in the atlantic ocean, advance of the storm system. the florida shelf, a shallow area, where they allow the storm system to flourish, and create monstrous storm surges that were forecast, and observed, across the area. they came ashore with 150 mile per hour winds, to give you a sense of scale of the dozens, and dozens of hurricanes,
