Mumbai: Uddhav Thackeray led Maharashtra government recently unveiled ‘Shakti Act’ to curb crimes against women and children. Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government approved the Shakti Bill which is expected to be tabled during the winter session. The Shakti Act is modelled on the lines of Andhra Pradesh Disha Act Criminal Law (AP Amendment) Act, 2019 with a provision of the death penalty for rape.
Several organisations, women s rights lawyers, activists, academicians, legal professionals have requested the MVA government to not table the Shakti Act because it is draconian, misplaced, protectionist, and not progressive.

The Maharashtra government this week presented
a draft bill making changes to existing laws on violence against women and children. The Bill, proposed to be enacted as Shakti Act, 2020, has provisions for enhancing punishment including death penalty for rape, fine up to Rs 10 lakh on perpetrators of violence, faster investigations and quicker disposal of cases.
