Pamplin Media Group - ShakeAlert will warn of earthquakes

ShakeAlert will warn of earthquakes March 11 2021 A new ShakeAlert notification system for earthquakes is going live in Oregon on Thursday morning. The system can detect significant earthquakes quickly and send a real-time alert to your phone before the shaking reaches you. ShakeAlert does not predict earthquakes or how long they will last but it does offer advance warning about quakes that have already started. The system will continue to monitor the shaking until it stops. You may get more than one of these alerts if it is a large earthquake and continues to grow, said Althea Rizzo of the Oregon Office of Emergency Management.

Pamplin Media Group - Technology provides valuable seconds

Technology provides valuable seconds March 09 2021 When disaster strikes, being prepared can make a big difference. A preparedness tool called ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System will be activated in Oregon on March 11. Already in place in California, ShakeAlert detects significant earthquakes quickly and sends an alert to people before shaking arrives at their location. The time between receiving the alert and feeling the shaking gives people critical seconds to protect themselves. No action needs to be taken on March 11 and no sign up is required, commented Paula Fasano Negele, public information officer for Oregon Office of Emergency Management. These important alerts come automatically on most cell phones making a distinctive sound and a text message that reads Earthquake Detected! Drop, Cover, Hold On. Protect Yourself.

NISQUALLY, Wash. - On Feb. 28, 2001, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nisqually, injuring hundreds of people and causing billions of dollars in damage. Now, 20 years later, how has Washington changed in response to the Nisqually quake? Understanding that the earth is actually in motion and that there is plate tectonics going on is what first hooked me in, University of Washington professor Harold Tobin said in 2019. We can help society if we understand faults better.
