Laying of the foundation stone of Ravi canal of the Shahpur Kandi Project has rekindled a ray of hope among farmers of Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir as over 32,000 hectares of barren land of Kandi belt will turn fertile after completion of the project. It will also provide irrigation facilities to over 5,000 hectares of land in Pathankot district of the neighbouring Punjab.
Union Minister of State Jatindra Singh, who is a Lok Sabha member from Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency, recently laid the foundation stone of the project. There was no hindrance in signing of agreement and execution of the project from the Punjab Government but the successive governments of J&K had intentionally delayed this project , he alleged.

KATHUA, Apr 10: Turning tables on successive Central and the erstwhile State Governments who were dominated by Kashmir centric politicians, Union Minister of State in PMO with independent charge of North Eastern States, Dr Jitendra Singh held them responsible for stalling the construction of much talked about Shahpur Kandi Project for 45 long years. He also did not spare the former J&K CM, Mehbooba Mufti for her negative role in signing the agreement with Punjab Government on the project after an initiative was taken by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in this regard.

KATHUA: Accusing the successive governments at the Centre and the then State of Jammu & Kashmir of deliberately stalling the prestigious Shahpur Kandi Dam National project for 45 long years, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh said, history will seek answers as to what were the political compulsions behind this delay. He said, while the governments of both the States of Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir were involved in this project, it was the wrong prioritization and the discriminatory attitude of the successive Jammu & Kashmir governments, which was responsible for this delay. He also accused the successive elected representatives from the area of not raising the issue, just to keep their Kashmir-centric leadership in good humour.
