Mumbai couple returns home from Qatar after getting entangled in a drugs case

updated: Apr 15 2021, 19:26 ist It was an emotional homecoming for the Mumbai-based couple, Mohammad Shareeq and Oniba Qureshi, who were held in a drugs case in Qatar around two years ago.  For the parents of Oniba and Shareeq, it was a moment of  joy as they also welcomed Aayat, their grand-daughter, who was born in jail in a foreign land. “I cannot forget these two years,” said Shareeq. We were trapped and entangled in a case with which we had no connection even remotely, he said.  “Life was difficult…I was expecting….emotionally we had broken down,” said Oniba, however, adding that the jail authorities took care of her well during the pregnancy.

Mohammad Shareeq and Oniba had gone on a “second honeymoon” to Qatar in July 2019 – a gift from Shareeq’s paternal aunt Tabassum Riyaz Qureshi – when they were arrested at Hamad International Airport in Doha for carrying 4.1 kilograms of hashish in their baggage.

On July 6, 2019, Mohammad Shareeq and his wife Oniba Kauser Shakeel Ahmed were arrested at Doha s Hamad International Airport by Qatar s drug enforcement agencies. The couple was cheated by drug traffickers on the pretext of a honeymoon package in India. The traffickers, after gaining the couple s confidence, had given them a bag containing contraband (drugs), telling them that it contained tobacco.
