No fantasy series is complete without some physical manifestation of Bad™. For

In Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels and the show that grew from its source material this pitch-black banner is known as the Shadow Fold, or sometimes the Unsea. Home to monstrous winged creatures known as volcra, the Fold cuts the country of Ravka in two, severing ties between West Ravka and East Ravka, not to mention ravaging trade routes and sending military strategists into a tizzy. Shadow and Bone hit this weekend on Netflix and brought the Grishaverse to life.
The Netflix series, based on the popular novels by Leigh Bardugo, tells the story of a land in fear of a dark force that threatens to overwhelm it.
From this land comes a girl named Alina with the power to save her world. With all the episodes in the first season dropped at once, fans are already anxiously awaiting news for Shadow and Bone Season 2.

Shadow and Bone. The immersive new Netflix show is the inclusive fantasy epic that we’ve been dreaming of. But if you’re still wrapping your head around the series and its magic users known as Grisha, we’re here to help. Set in the Tsarist Russian-inspired world of Ravka, the show introduces a reality where magic is real. Referred to as the Small Science, it’s a school of study that allows certain magically inclined folks to wield strange powers. There are multiple types of Grisha who play key parts in the series. Depending on their powerset, they wear different beautiful embroidered bulletproof robes. So if you want to know more about them, read on… but beware of minor plot spoilers.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a fairly high-budget genre show in possession of any fantasy elements
must be referred to at least once as the “next Game of Thrones” – and so it’s been for Netflix’s long-awaited adaptation of Shadow and Bone, the first in a series of “Grishaverse” novels by American author Leigh Bardugo.

As is often the case the Westeros comparison isn’t particularly apt in this series, which follows a rather more traditional hero’s journey albeit in an intriguing setting (a sort of alternate “Tsarpunk” Russia and Asia) and with a compelling magic system that’s well brought to life onscreen.
