A man disputing a charge of driving while holding a mobile phone is to reappear at Longford District Court on June 22, where he will produce a phone bill in an effort to prove that he was not using his phone when observed by a member of the Roads Policing Unit in Granard last year.
Pat Donnelly, Barrack Street, Granard, was pulled over by Gda Aidan Lenehan last March.
“On March 31, 2020, at 9.55am on Barrack Street, I saw a jeep and observed the driver holding a black mobile phone. He was holding it with his left hand, across his face to his right ear,” Gda Lenehan told the court last week.

A man accused of urinating in a garda cell, resulting in a cleaning bill of €170 has been handed a number of fines, with three months to pay.
William Lawrence, Cloncovid, Co Cavan, appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes at Longford District Court last week where he explained that he was unable to pay the €170 because he’d been in custody for a dangerous driving incident which resulted in a garda being hospitalised with a broken wrist.
“You put me on remand for three weeks and I had to pay €1,000 bail but while I was in custody my money stopped,” Mr Lawrence told Judge Hughes.

A man who delayed an early morning train to Dublin by 25 minutes last June has avoided jail after an appearance at Longford District court last week.
Joe McDonagh (36), of no fixed address, was charged with criminal damage and public order at Longford Train Station. The criminal damage charge was struck out at last week’s court sitting.
On June 10, 2020, gardaí received reports of a male causing a disturbance at the train station at 5.30am. When they arrived at the scene, Gardaí spoke to the security guard.
This is the man gardaí allege forced six officers into 14-day self-isolation and necessitated an €1,800 deep clean of a garda station after he blatantly flaunted Covid .
Gardaí allege Longford man Hughie Nevin went out drinking in local pubs and then assaulted his wife, knowing he had tested positive for the virus.
The shocking claims were made against Nevin, who denies he knew he had tested positive, over two separate court hearings, as the 25-year-old faced a charge of assault on a woman at St. Michael s Road, Longford on December 19.
Nevin insisted in court this week he had not seen the text message from the HSE as he shares a phone with his wife, adding the handset was dead when the message arrived.
