Police consult with GBV activists

Cape Town - This week police met gender-based violence (GBV) activists to discuss interventions after nearly 10 000 rapes were recorded in the first three months of the year.
In his crime stats, Minister of Police Bheki Cele said 9 518 rapes were reported in the first three months of 2021.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said: “Sexual offence crimes are usually committed behind doors by people known to the victim. We need to engage GBV organisations on how to educate society on preventative measures.
“The minister mentioned that we are increasing the intensity of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations unit (FCS) to be harsher on the perpetrators of GBV and rape.”
Galinda Nelson has been charged with child abuse.
She allegedly chained a child to a bed and used a horsewhip to beat another.
Last week, the case was postponed after proceedings were disrupted when she locked herself in the court bathroom and refused to come out.

Galinda Nelson appeared in the Worcester Magistrate s Court on Wednesday on charges of child abuse.
The case against her was postponed last week after proceedings were disrupted when she locked herself in the court bathroom and refused to come out shortly before the matter was scheduled to start, said National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila.

Police have arrested a serial rapist in Johannesburg.
They have now linked the man â who terrorized women on Gautengâs East Rand - to 60 rape cases using DNA evidence.
Police say Nkosinathi Phakade is perhaps also linked to 40 additional cases.

Phakade was expected to âappearâ in absentia in the Daveyton Magistrates Court on Thursday for rapes committed over almost a decade.

266 life sentence handed down on rapists in the past year

Johannesburg - More than 1 700 people were convicted of sexual offences in the past year with 266 receiving life sentences.
Police spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said on Monday the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations (FCS) detectives’ dedication and commitment in preventing, combating and investigating sexual offence-related crimes has been successful.
“The successful prosecution and 356 life imprisonment sentences handed down to 266 sexual offences perpetrators in the past year bears testament to this,” Mathe said.
The spokesperson said that about 1 733 accused persons were convicted, about 5 008 20-year sentences were handed down to 189 accused, 487 accused were handed 8 166 sentences ranging from 10 to 19 years’ imprisonment and 791 accused were handed 3 717 sentences ranging from 1 to 9 years’ imprisonment.
