a controversial sentence from a judge in montana getting national attention. this teacher gets 30 days in jail for raping a 14-year-old student who wound up committing suicide as the criminal case was still pending. it s not just a sentence that has the folks so angry out there, trace gallagher live in our west coast newsroom. what upset most folks? the timeline is very critical. that teacher you just showed, 49-year-old stacy, was arrested for having sex with stacy morales in 2008, that affair had been going on for months. while the case was pending, she killed herself days before her 17th birthday. her mom said it was a key reason she committed suicide. the prosecutors agreed to drop the charges if the teacher would plead guilty and enter a sex
there is pretreatment, intensive treatment, and prerelease treatment. during their intensive treatment is when they actually have to admit their crime, and they work on their issues. i think it s helped a lot. it s helped a helluva lot. i now have a lot more tools to deal with issues that still affect me, a lot of my issues from back then don t affect me anymore. i m not saying that they are gone. but i know how to deal with them now. the reason for the sex offender program is such a high profile issue, and, quite frankly, the other reason is that sex offenders are going to get out of prison anyway. so we we are doing our best to rehabilitate them. because it is relatively new, we don t have statistics as far as recidivism rate, but we do know that we re giving them the tools to survive without re-offending out in society. it is liberating.

way the suspect behaved and started firing. there is also the colorado license plates. incidentally, the car had two different license plates on that car. so an indication that perhaps the person that was driving that car obviously tried to change license plates, trying to conceal himself in some way, so that s one of the other things they re taking a close look at, and trying to look into as we speak. i also understand colorado authorities are looking at a saudi national as a possible person of interest. do we know anything about that? reporter: this was a situation that was that authorities in el paso county had confirmed, that there was a saudi national who was convicted of sexually sexual crimes against a housekeeper back in 2006 and that that person was trying to get paroled and be able to be sent to saudi arabia but that prison director had denied that request because the saudi national refused to participate in a sex offender program. so they were trying to they acknow
