Sevierville man charged in Clarksville slaying

CLARKSVILLE — Police here have charged a man with Sevierville ties with killing another person while they were apparently both staying at a Salvation Army shelter over the weekend. Corey Daniel Allen gave investigators an address on River Court in Sevierville after he was charged with the murder over the weekend, according to information from the jail. Clarksville Police say Allen and another man, whose name was not released Monday, stayed at the shelter overnight Sunday. At some point, police believe Allen killed the second man. Police said they were withholding the name because they had not reached the victim’s next of kin.

Lawsuit: Deputies assaulted suspect while handcuffed

SEVIERVILLE — A Crossville man is seeking $1 million from the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, claiming in a federal lawsuit that six deputies beat him unconscious while handcuffed during an arrest last year. Franklin Dee Copeland Jr., 48, filed the complaint Monday in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee, on the one-year anniversary of his arrest. “(Copeland) was wrongfully battered, unlawfully seized and unlawfully detained against his will by the defendants … when those defendants responded to a false report of an attempted robbery,” the complaint said. It says the deputies “did intentionally and with malice beat and batter the plaintiff after placing handcuffs and restraints upon the plaintiff, by hitting and punching him, jumping on top of him, slamming him to the ground and kicking the plaintiff.”
