Several Illinois state lawmakers are looking to give the Legislative Inspector General more independence to investigate lawmakers.
The Legislative Inspector General is overseen by the Legislative Ethics Commission, a bipartisan panel of lawmakers from the House and Senate. There have been various reforms to the office over the years since a multi-year vacancy was revealed in 2017 during the peak of the #MeToo movement.
One reform several years ago allowed sexual harassment claims to be investigated without the inspector getting permission from the commission.
State Rep. Mike Murphy, R-Springfield, wants to give the inspector general more freedom with House Bill 2575.

Several Illinois agencies warned about extremely hazardous travel conditions Monday afternoon as a major snowstorm brought “near whiteout conditions” to the.
-A positivity rate of 12% or lower for three consecutive days.
-Hospital bed and ICU bed availability of 20% or higher for three consecutive days.
-Decreases in COVID-19 hospitalizations on seven days within a 10 day stretch.

Region 1 (Northwest Illinois):
This region’s positivity rate has now been below the 12% threshold for seven consecutive days, continuing its fall to 9.6% as of Dec. 17, according to the IDPH. Hospital bed availability (25.4%) and ICU bed availability (22.9%) are both slowly increasing, while hospitalizations have decreased for the last 10 days in a row, meaning that the region could be pulled back from Tier 3 mitigations if the governor’s office elects to do so.
