Police were called to Bromwich Street, The Haulgh, at 10.40pm on Saturday, May 29, to reports of a stabbing. Initial police enquiries established that there was a fight between a large group of people. Four men, aged between 30 and 45, were taken to hospital with injuries Since then, Greater Manchester Police has confirmed that five have been charged in connection with the incident: Michael Allen, 32, of no fixed address, charged with possession of a bladed article Jack Bent, 25, of Lonsdale Grove, Farnworth, charged with violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon

ONE of Bolton’s great characters Fred Dibnah pictured hard at work in 1982. Steeplejack Fred had been brought in to demolish the chimney belonging to the Ocean Mill on Settle Street, Great Lever. The mill had closed in 1960. Using his tried and trusted method, Fred removed some of the bricks from the base of the chimney at the former cotton spinning mill and then set fire to the wooden props which were effectively holding the structure upright. Crowds gathered to watch as the chimney safely crashed down to earth in October 1982.
