BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): “Food can be a major driver for visitors when choosing a destination; hence gastronomy tourism has evolved to encompass activities beyond the plate, ” said Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Ali Apong at the launching of Brunei Gastronomy Week (BGW) 2021 on Wednesday (Feb 17).
“This includes attending food events and festivals, visiting local markets, taking cooking classes, going on food tours, and learning about the production of food by visiting farms and producers, ” he added.
The minister urged all tourism service providers “to look beyond providing just a normal package tour; and look into more experiential, community based or ecotourism initiatives, as well as sustainable tours, to make the tourism offering more attractive for both domestic and international visitors”.
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Feb. 8 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei Darussalam signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Singapore to strengthen cooperation in agrifood and agro-technology.
Signing on behalf of the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, while Singapore Food Agency Chief Executive Officer Lim Kok Thai signed on behalf of the Republic of Singapore.
The signing will widen cooperation between the two countries in fields of agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, agrotechnology, especially in capacity building and market access.

ASEAN tourism ministers shared concerns over the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak this year, with tourism being one of the hardest hit sectors.
The tourism sector suffered a loss of approximately 36 per cent in tourism receipts; international arrivals declined by approximately 72 per cent; hotel room occupancy is at its lowest; and the travel and tourism industry had also experienced massive cancellations in 2020.
These concerns were highlighted following the 24
th Meeting of ASEAN Tourism Ministers, with the 20
th Meeting of ASEAN Plus Three (China, Japan and Republic of Korea) Tourism Ministers, and the Eighth Meeting of ASEAN-India Tourism Ministers through video conference.

The Brunei Darussalam National Council on Climate Change (BNCCC) launched the
Protokol Hijau, or Green Protocol, yesterday as part of Climate Action Year, by planting 68 saplings at the recreation site of Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge in Kampong Sungai Besar.
The event was jointly officiated by Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Ir Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar and Minister of Energy Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussien, as Co-Chairmen of BNCCC.
Cabinet Ministers, deputy ministers, foreign diplomats in Brunei Darussalam, permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretaries also participated in the tree planting ceremony.
