Stabiliser cattle breeder commits to genomic EBVs

April 29, 2021, 11:16 am The Stabiliser Cattle Company (SCC) has confirmed that, in future, all animals sold at official sales will have their Genomic Enhanced Estimated Breeding Values (GEBVs) made available to buyers. Ireland will be included within the geographic remit of this development. “Genomic technology is a game changer for the beef industry, allowing producers to make data-backed decisions early on in an animal’s life for faster genetic development,” explained Seth Wareing, SCC business manager. “This is not only extremely beneficial for pedigree producers making breeding decisions within their herds, but for commercial producers wanting to improve the genetics they bring into their herds.”

Genomic technology puts beef farmers in fast lane

This follows the launch of Stabiliser Cattle Company’s (SCC) genomic enhanced estimated breeding values (GEBVs). GEBVs are available for all production characteristics, from disease resilience to carcass traits. “GEBVs are going to allow breeders to accelerate the genetic progress of their own herds, with sustainability and profitability benefits,” says SCC’s business manager, Seth Wareing. “Stabiliser breeders [will be able] to make decisions early on in an animal’s life, giving them the ability to make better management decisions for better use of resources.

Stabiliser Cattle Company offers app to monitor performance

A LEADING company in suckler beef genetics has introduced new livestock management software to its high-performance breeding programme. The Stabiliser Cattle Company (SCC), which is based in Driffield, East Yorkshire, has joined forces with AgriWebb to offer a mobile app and insight-led dashboards to its 110 breeders, called Multipliers, who manage more than 12,000 breeding cattle. The software makes it easier to record performance data on animals, and view numerous insights including weight records and pedigree traits. It is speeding up data collection and providing evidence to support the SCC s selection of the best available genetics. Within the partnership agreement, all Stabiliser producers will have discounted access to the software in order to track animal performance on their own farms. This will help maximise their productivity and support wider data collection on the breed, supporting the company s aim to continuously improve the economic efficiency of its herd.

BSAS conference: What will our future beef farms look like?

April 15, 2021 1:06 pm Predicting the future structure of beef farms in the UK was one of the key themes addressed at the 2021 British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) annual conference. Seth Wareing, from the Stabiliser Cattle Company, confirmed that beef cattle will continue to play a critically important role in converting grass into high-value animal protein. He said: “Ruminants are the only animals that can do this job. What’s more, they play a critically important role in those areas of the country where ploughing is not an option. “Currently, the beef industry has a very fragmented structure. Looking to the future, we need to see greater levels of communication along every aspect of the food chain, involving farmers, meat processers and consumers,” he continued.
