We start in a state thats been under the spotlight since saturday. Today th today, the same day arizona is preparing to pay tribute to john mccain, republicans in the grand canyon state are going to the polls for the other senate seat, the one big vacated by jeff flake. Whats really fascinating about todays contest is that it speaks to what weve been discussing since mccains death. What and where is the heart and soul of the Republican Party . Both in arizona and around the country. Three candidates, none embracing mccain, all allies of President Trump. Former state senator kelli ward, who joined the campaign trail with controversial figures

Officials, hill and vindman, who talks with investigators. But the white house chief of staff is not talking. Thats what one Administration Source is confirming this morning. Add Mick Mulvaney to the noshow list. Weve got our nbc news team here with the latest from the nations kpnatio nations capitol. We are waiting to hear what the president had to say. Let me start with john then allen, National Political reporter for nbcnews. Com and our nbc news road warriors are here as well. John, let me start with you, and the lay of the land. A longtime bloomberg adviser told nbc that bloomberg is increasingly concerned that the current field of candidates is not well positioned and saying he would be able to take the fight to trump and win. Every candidate thinks they can take the fight to President Trump and win. Why does bloomberg think hes so special . about any of the testimony so far. there s reason to be in some of these things. but i think some of the fr frustration you see among republicans is there s drip drip drip of transcripts. they could release all these things, but they re packaging it up and elongating the story. one of the things the president is talking about is jeff sessions, the guy he fired as attorney general and the guy who happens to be making it official today to start the process of taking back his old senate seat. the president was asked if he would endorse jeff sessions in this race. he says he hasn t made up his mind. it s interesting because donald trump has a lot of power in this position. he is extremely popular in alabama. he is somebody who enjoys wild approval and he is somebody who has not been shy about how much he dislikes the guy who recused himself from the russia investigation as attorney general. i want to bring in vaughn hillyard, sessions team is out with ads calling jeff sessions a
what country you re from, that is not wrong. absolutely. that s why this should be so easy to explain. they could have been talking about the iran deal. but to say there s nothing c campaign related in september doesn t pass the smell test. the biggest things happening at that moment had to do with the leaks that was directly related to the campaign. it would be odd if it didn t come up in some way, that they didn t talk about that question. i m going to keep going back to the fact that if our government recognizes this person as a spy, what were they doing meeting, and why did he not talk about it? because spying isn t some clandestine thing all the time. sometimes they just want to get inside a senate office and collect information and see what staffers are doing. it isn t this high-level thing. i find that very problematic and i cannot believe that the sessions team is not more out in front of this and is letting this story get more and more air because it s going to eat him alive
