Texas has so many stray dogs that they are shipped to shelters all over the United States, including Rhode Island. Many of them were pictured in a recent email sent to Volunteer Services for Animals, asking us to take mostly large, mixed-breed dogs just like the ones we have waiting for adoption or facing euthanasia in Rhode Island shelters. Every week, the Providence Sunday Journal showcases shelters and rescue groups with dogs and cats needing homes. VSA and other Rhode Island humane groups have worked for decades to reduce the population of unwanted pets which has proven to be an ongoing commitment. Things are better now, but we still have too many homeless cats and dogs.
