Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is adding K-12 teachers and staff, daycare workers, pregnant women and people ages 55-64 with certain underlying conditions to the pool of those eligible for COVID-19 vaccines beginning Monday. Being able to get to teachers is really important to our state, Edwards said Thursday afternoon. They ve been on the front lines of the pandemic and play a critical role.
Louisiana schools Superintendent Cade Brumley said he was grateful and relieved Edwards made teachers eligible.
The Louisiana Federation of Teachers union also quickly responded.
“This is an important development for our teachers, school employees and the communities they serve, Louisiana Federation of Teachers President Larry Carter said in a statement. Vaccinating teachers and school employees is one of the best tools we have to keep schools safe and open and today’s decision will go a long way towards getting us back to normal.”
