L.M. Bogad is one of two UC Davis College of Letters and Science faculty to receive Guggenheim Fellowships in the past week. He is exploring current-day political theatre surrounding global climate change.

Ali Anooshahr, professor of history, are among 184 artists, writers, scholars and scientists across North America named to the 2021 class of Guggenheim Fellows on April 8. They were chosen through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants.
Their selection brings to 42 the number of College of Letters and Science faculty awarded Guggenheim Fellowships eight of them in the past four years.

While having a bowl of soup on a trip to Cambodia, Nite Yun, who was trained as a nurse and is now the chef-owner of the award-winning restaurant Nyum Bai in Oakland, realized that eating could be a way of healing. Yun believes the purpose of food is more than sustenance. Every dish is a cultural story and an ode to generational resilience.
Yun is one of hundreds of women entrepreneurs San Francisco’s beloved food business incubator La Cocina ( The Kitchen in Spanish) has supported over the last decade. Graduates from La Cocina have scaled industry barriers to establish restaurants and factories around the Bay Area, served millions of nutritious, multicultural meals, and generated tens of millions of dollars in sales. Yun’s story is one of success for one woman, but also for her family, her culture, and for a business that supports community health.
Northampton Arts Council awards $22K to local artists, groups

NORTHAMPTON It’s been a difficult year for artists and art organizations, with the pandemic shutting down the vast majority of live performances. But the Northampton Arts Council is doing what it can to keep artists afloat.
The council has awarded just under $22,000 in grants to support art projects and programming in and around Northampton. The 35 grants made, for $21,960, were allocated to the city by the Massachusetts Cultural Councils’ Local Cultural Council (LCC) program.
Qatar Living speaks to Qatar-based entrepreneur, university lecturer, international trainer, engineer and a public speaker, Emad Saif, to learn more about his project Play Meetup.
Emad grew up in Jordan and lived most of his life in Canada, where he studied.
He holds a M.S. in Engineering Entrepreneurship from McMaster University and a BSc. in Industrial Engineering from Ryerson University.
He came to Qatar in 2011 and began to work as a business development manager in construction.
With a specialization in entrepreneurship education training, he currently works as a lecturer and coordinator of entrepreneurship at Qatar University.
Emad has passion for education, entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity.
“We focused on the literal idea of multiperspective,” he says. “Lots of views from different angles.”
This reflected the organisation’s approach too, as the debates are “not simple but multifaceted and multilayered”, Sutherland adds.
The designer says that the same words kept cropping up throughout the initial discussions: “Thoughtful, beautiful, playful, experimental and transformative”.
The team used typography to embody these concepts. “We initially worked on variations of the name itself,” Sutherland says, before also considering the difference perspectives and angle.
These have been combined into variations of the full name, which also prompted the development of the full headline typeface.
