The twoalarm fire forced dozens of people to evacuate the building i hewitt. More than 100 firefighters responded and were able to rescue one person. 24 they had to bring in medical buses while children sit outside in the cold. Other residents had on heavy coats and hats. We have update on fire in the bronx. They think it started with a stove. Not that far from the bronx floor. Started before 7 last night and when a woman left her burning apartment she left her door open which allowed it to spread. The fire quickly spread up the stairs. Fire travels up. The stairway acted looicike a chimney. Took the fire so fast they had little time to react. Couldnt get back down the stairs. Those that tried a few of them perished. In fact, of the 12 people that died, five of them never even made it out of the burning building alive. There were more than 20 units in the building, but Officials Say the building wasnt new enough to require some of the fireproofing measures like sprinkler system.
