was co produced by the wounded warrior project as part of its tenth anniversary. it s the first of 12 documentaries and details the struggles our veterans must overcome to reintegrate into society. sunday s film will be accompanied by a one-hour discussion about veterans issues, live from the september 11th memorial in lower manhattan. and we re delighted to welcome the host of that special, patrick murphy, a veteran of the second iraq war, a former member of congress, and an msnbc contributor. patrick, it s great to have you. tell us in general terms about this special, its purpose, and the event on sunday. well, martin, thanks for having me on. and to all the veterans out there, happy veteran s day weekend. absolutely. 9/11 changed lives for so many. but especially to 2.5 million americans who soon went to afghanistan and iraq. and so that s why it s fitting this veteran s day weekend we re actually hosting this at ground zero to talk about what that
marked 12 years since the 9/11 attacks. family members and first responders of the nearly 3,000 killed came to reflect on those lost but not forgotten. moments of silence held at the national september 11th memorial in lower manhattan and took place at the pentagon and a field in shanksville, pennsylvania, where one of the hijacked airlines crashed. at the white house president obama and the first lady were joined by vice president biden and his wife for a solemn memorial. they stood quietly at 8:46 a.m. marking the exact time when the first planes struck the north tower of the world trade center. afterwards the silence was pierced by the playing of taps. governor control advocates took another hit as they voted to end a mandatory gun registry and voted to abolish so the city would comply with a state concealed carry law. that law which was passed in july gives complete control of gun regulations to the state of illinois.
september 11th memorial at the location we used to call ground zero. i ve been to that location many times since september 11th, but not since the memorial opened two years ago. here s some good news. 9 million visitors beat me to it. that s how many have flocked to pay their respects in just the last two years. and they ve come from 180 different nations. today, under threatening skies on a hot friday in august, it was nice to see the memorial was crowded. designer, michael, and landscape architect peter walker are to be commended. there s tremendous attention to detail. i m sure you ve seen the photographs and film footage of the two pools set in the footprints of the original twin towers. water constantly flows into both pools masking the sound of the surrounding city and providing the appropriate backdrop for reflection. 2,983 victims are remembered here including 6 from the 1993 attack. their names are arranged in meaningful adjacentsies and
they pulled a body that matches the description of the 30-year-old. her name lindsey stewart. the best man is presumed to be dead. they came to pick them up on the boat. where they were going, i don t know. stewart s fiancee and three others suffered head injuries. the couple was set to marry in two weeks. this morning, the driver of the train that derailed in spain killing 80 people including an american woman will appear before a judge. he was released from the hospital and taken to jail. he is being held on suspicion of reckless homicide. so far, he refused to answer any questions from police. this comes as we learn he may have been on his cell phone at the time the train ran off the tracks. las vegas is preparing to bulldoze a september 11th memorial. it was created outside the new york new york casino in the days after the terrorist attacks.
