Modern authorities have vigorously debated whether a sound heard through a microphone, hearing aid (which functions much like a microphone), or telephone shares the status of the original sound. This issue impacts the fulfillment of numerous mitzvot, such as listening to the blowing of a shofar or to Torah and Megilla readings, by hearing them through these electronic media. Rav Ovadia Yosef (Teshuvot Yechave Da’at 3:96) strongly endorses the stringent opinion.
How Does a Microphone Work?
Before addressing the halachic aspects of electronic devices, Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Teshuvot Minchat Shlomo 1:9) describes the workings of a microphone in great detail. The endless sea of Torah study can be navigated in myriad ways. Masechet Yevamot spans 122 pages. The current cycle of Daf Yomi completed Yevamot in 122 days. In contrast, Daf Hashavua began Masechet Yevamot in May of 2020 and anticipates its completion only in September 2022. Knowing full well the length of study of this masechet, the Mermelstein family sponsored the entire Daf Hashavua’s learning of Yevamot in memory of beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Shelley Mermelstein, Yosef Shmuel Shmelke, z”l, who was an enthusiastic participant in the local Daf Hashavua Program at Congregation Beth Aaron.

There are no coincidences in Jewish life. Our reading the stories of Yosef and his brothers on Shabbat Chanukah is not an accident. We believe that the Kri’at HaTorah of Shabbat Chanukah hints at Chanukah’s hidden dark side.
Sadly, the Hasmonean revolt against the Syrian-Greeks involved a bitter civil war. The Maccabim battled not only the Yevanim but also the Mityavnim, the Jews who chose to assimilate into Greek culture. This tragic but unavoidable confrontation is echoed by the fight between Yosef and his brothers. The painful parallels between these horrifying events are too miserable for us to articulate. It is therefore reduced to a subtle hint.
