A north Iowa mental health expert advises watching for warning signs if a loved one or someone you know is struggling emotionally.
Mitchell County Regional Health Center’s Sheila Kobliska specializes in the mental health of older adults as the hospital’s Program Director for Senior Life Solutions. She says many of the warning signs a senior is having mental health issues also apply to people of all ages.
Kobliska adds other warning signs include changes in eating habits and loss of enjoyment of things one used to enjoy. She says if someone is struggling with their mental health, remind them they are not alone and there is help available.
Recently, my daughter got a candle as a gift. She took a deep breath and immediately passed it over to me. There was something in that scent that reminded her of the aftershave that my father, her beloved grandfather, used to wear.
You could see in her eyes that it did her heart good, it made her feel closer to him. Indeed, there was something, a familiar fragrance, in that jar.
The sense of smell is powerful indeed. It can evoke very intense emotions. I know that the smell of a recipe from my childhood immediately takes me back.
