Budget panel Republicans cut hundreds of items from Evers’ budget Democrats on the legislature’s budget committee are calling Republican cuts to  Governor Tony Evers’ proposed budget “foolish and embarrassing.” Those comments came after the Joint Finance Committee removed a total of 380 items from the Governor’s budget on Thursday. Representative Evan Goyke said the cuts would leave a “fiscal hole we will not be able to climb out of.” The Milwaukee Democrat expanded on that, in a YouTube video. Governor Evers is calling on Wisconsinites to contact their lawmakers to push for items to be reintroduced into the budget, including expansion of Badgercare. “This is an embarrassing decision that will cost Wisconsin for decades to come,” said JFC Democrat, Senator Jon Erpenbach said of the Republican decision to reject federal funding for that.

Evers Urges Residents to Contact Lawmakers About JFC Budget Cuts Governor Tony Evers is calling on Wisconsinites to contact their senators and representatives after today’s (Thursday) vote by the G-O-P Joint Finance Committee to slash his proposed budget.  The Democratic governor claims an overwhelming majority of residents support expanding BadgerCare, legalizing marijuana, raising the minimum wage and a non-partisan approach to redistricting.  Republican co-chair Senator Howard Marklein says they’re building a new budget from base that is the same as the budget Evers signed two years ago.  Evers said in a statement, “Republicans have obstructed our ability to beat this virus every step of the way, and now they’re playing politics with our economic recovery.”  More than 380 items were removed from the proposed Badger Bounceback budget.

Tony Evers to discuss his plans for spending billions in federal relief aid. In a letter to Evers, GOP leaders invite him to meet with them “as soon as possible” to share details about his vision to spend $3.2 billion from the American Rescue Plan Act. With members of the budget writing committee scheduled to begin taking votes on Thursday to craft0 the next spending plan for the state, Republicans want “to know where the federal funds are going so that we can direct state funds where we need them,” wrote Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, Representative Mark Born and Senator Howard Marklein, co-chairs of the budget committee, in a letter to Evers.
