The government. This came after weeks of acrimony and no shortage of hostility here on the senate floor and elsewhere. And while most of the recent debate has been focused on the future of immigration policy, another vitally important priority and a bipartisan priority, no less, was also addressed this week. Im talking of course about the sixyear extension of the Childrens Health Insurance Program which was included in the funding bill. Its a shame really that this bipartisan accomplishment has in some respects been overlooked while more attention has been given to partisan squabbling over more divisive issues. Since its interception, chip has been a bipartisan program. In 1997, senator kennedy and i came together to create chip in order to provide Health Insurance to vulnerable children. It was a Republicancontrolled Congress working with a democratic president that brought this program into existence. The year before that same Republican Congress and democratic president worked toget
For their child who has a disability. But its not just the children who will suffer if this bill is passed, it is our parents, it is the Senior Citizen of it is the Senior Citizens of this country. What every person should know, and i think and i fear many do not know, is that medicaid now pays for over twothirds of all nursing home care. So lets think about this for a moment. What happens if there is a 1 trillion cut to medicaid . What happens to our parents and our grandparents and people with disabilities in america who have their nursing home coverage paid for by medicaid today . Now, mr. President , i may be wrong, but i dont recall there has been one hearing to hear from groups like the aarp, to hear from Senior Citizen groups, to hear from doctors, to hear from nurses, to hear from Nursing Homes, as to what the implications are of a trillion dollar cut in medicaid and what it means for the families in this country who have loved ones in Nursing Homes. Now, there may have been a

This hearing will come to order. Good afternoon. I welcome all of you veterans, caregivers and advocates, especially my former colleague , senator Elizabeth Dole who has been an extranet advocate for military caregivers. Our military families, heroes in plain clothing are serving in americas cities and communities every single day. The effects of military service do not end with a tour of duty. For many veterans and their family, the journey sometimes extends for a lifetime. For some with both visible and invisible scars, the transition home is not easy. Recovery to can take decades. Along the way, mothers, fathers, wives, and other family members and friends step in to serve. Today we will focus on those who care for americans veterans. In the United States there are 5. 5 million military caregivers. These family members and loved ones provide care on a constant and routine basis to our veterans. They are often vital in assisting veterans to make the transition all the way home. Milit
As close as i will ever be to a presidency. [laughter] and honor we are almost all in different two. Presiding over the senate can be a nuisance, ceremonial work and is relegated to the junior members of the majority. But i stand here today looking worse im sure i have a refreshed appreciation for the customs of this body and for the other 99 privileged souls whove been elected to the senate. Ive been a member of the United States senate for 30 years. Another profession before here that was profoundly rewarding which i had experiences and friendships i revere but make no mistake, the job here is the most important in my life and i am so grateful to the people of arizona for the privilege, the owner of serving here and the opportunity that gives me to play a small role in the history of the country i love. I know and admire men and women in the senate to pay much more than a small role in history. Their ambitions were frequently in conflict. They held different views on the issues of th
