The federal Food and Drug Administration has granted emergency use authorization for a second COVID-19 vaccine, developed by the Cambridge-based biotechnology company Moderna and the National Institutes of Health, for people age 18 and up.
The second green light came December 18, as the first vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, approved just over a week ago, is rolling out across the country. Health care workers ranging from custodial staff to doctors began receiving vaccinations at UCSF and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. More are expected to begin receiving the Moderna vaccine starting this week.
The Moderna vaccine was developed with support from the federal government s Operation Warp Speed, and it will be distributed to Americans free of charge.

Follow RT on Though it’s already passed Congress, President Donald Trump says he will veto an annual defense spending bill (NDAA), claiming China “loves” its present form and demanding a harsher crackdown on social media companies.
“I will Veto the Defense Bill, which will make China very unhappy,” Trump tweeted on Thursday.
“They love it. Must have Section 230 termination, protect our National Monuments and allow for removal of military from far away, and very unappreciative, lands. Thank you!”

Last week, the United Kingdom (UK) moved forward with its first inoculations of the approved Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The United States (US) approved the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine on Friday, 11 December, and will begin inoculations this coming week. The European Union (EU) continues to stress safety over speed in its vaccine approval process and has yet to follow suit.
The UK sealed the deal on a number of Free Trade Agreements, while talks with the EU continue without any significant breakthroughs. Meanwhile, the UK and EU are also preparing for a possible hard exit scenario.
This past week, Poland and Hungary reached a compromise with the EU on the custom union’s Budget and Recovery Fund, which will allow funds to flow at the start of the new year. The 116th US Congress, meanwhile, continues negotiations over a new COVID relief package, amid other priorities before adjourning.
