after the overwhelming defeat of governor john kasich s union-busting law. joining us tonight, ohio congresswoman betty sutton. jim dean is with us, the chair of democracy for america. also congressman tim ryan. great to have all of you with us tonight. the effort to defeat this senate bill has been fantastic but we should also point on the fact that there was tremendous effort to make sure that senate bill 5 stayed in place. this was a defeat tonight for the coke brothers. it was a defeat tonight for liv cheney. she was involved. sarah palin was involved. pat boone was involved. a number of republican governors were involved. they were the losers. fox news came here with hannity. that didn t do any good. rush limbaugh said the people of ohio were going to rape themselves to pay public employees. and herman cain did a robo call. so none of that had any effect. you had these national
potentially dull the effect of a very well organized and very well financed union effort on another ballot issue. the other key ballot issue in ohio, that being ballot issue too, shep. shepard: what about the vote on unions that governor kasich is pushing through there. that s ballot issue two. unions are very confident that they are going to send down to district attorney feet governor kasich s signature piece of legislation. this is senate bill 5 which reigned in the collective bargaining power of unions required, union members who are public service workers to pay a abortion of their health care and retirement. since it passed last march, that bill has become increasingly unpoplar as has governor kasich. but he remains undaunted to the face of this kind of criticism. here is kasich. if you lose 600,000 jobs over the last 10 years, what are you supposed to do? sit back and make everybody happy? well, if issue two does go down to defeat, union organizers are very confident it
ohio are speaking loudly tonight saying they are standing up to public sector workers. our sheroes and heroes who bring it every single day on our behalves. will he politically change in your opinion if it s a big number tonight? i m not sure, ed. it s up to the people and everybody here tonight, everybody that s voted to make him keep the commitment and uphold what the voters are voting on tonight which is no. you know, ed, i am happy i got a chance to vote twice no on senate bill 5. i did it on the floor of the senate and i did it tonight. it should be pointed out that that was a very close vote. it was. that was a close vote. there were a lot of republicans that did not vote for it. in fact, i think six. six that did not vote for it. that s right. brian hester, what would a loss mean for governor kasich tonight? this was a guy who was elected with 49% and thought he was elected with 100%. it remains to be seen what governor kasich is going to learn by this. i w

unions i think following the people, but i think here in ohio, it s been the people following the unions. i mean, i think there s no doubt that you guys were the first ones that said, hey, time out on this senate bill 5 stuff. this is coming after a voice of the workplace. this is coming after middle class families. what kind of leadership role is organized labor going to have to play if president obama is going to get re-elected? i didn t hear much about presidential politics when i was out and about in toledo and in columbus a few times. this wasn t about presidential politics. your take on all that. this really had nothing to do with presidential politics. what this did do is show our members that what they do in the polls matters. they have to think long and hard, how they vote, how it s going to affect their job and the future. i think it s going to make a heck of a difference in 2012. i think what it really meant here in the state of ohio is, these people sitting behind me have
