Modified fundraisers, community support keep Kitsap County nonprofits afloat during pandemic

It’s tough to host a gala when large gatherings pose a serious public health risk.  COVID-19 has prevented nonprofit organizations from putting on their traditional major fundraisers. Many organizations, including West Sound Wildlife Shelter, the Kitsap Humane Society and Meals on Wheels Kitsap, have adapted by pivoting to virtual fundraisers. “Historically, our largest gala is in April, which raises about a third of our operating budget,” said Lisa Horn, West Sound Wildlife Shelter’s executive director. “When COVID came around in 2020, we pushed it to the fall thinking we could do it in person. We had to flip to a virtual fundraiser, but it worked out pretty well.”
